Will the REAL culture-trend please stand up!?!
There is mounting evidence that crummy governance has brought about the very pill-popping society it is currently concerned about.
During the last two decades large alcohol manufacturers increased their range of products, ramped up the amount they were producing, upped the level of sophistication and diversification of their advertising and allied themselves with major sports and media outlets and together, they made binge drinking fashionable.
This government-endorsed business practice created a blue-print of methodology for large pharma manufacturers. Using the same clever marketing strategies and, in alliance with tigger-happy doctors, drug-culture has now become fashionable.
With the national spotlight on the impact of methamphetamine on Australian communities, medical professionals are worried awareness around increasing alcohol and prescription drug misuse has been (purposefully) displaced from the public conscience.
It's the best of both worlds. By neatly diverting our attention the government is able to deny any responsibility for allowing large alcohol/drug industries to create a social problem all the while demanding the entertainment industries pay to fix it, without anyone noticing a thing!
Make no mistake, the real health issue in Australia is binge-culture and this is reflected in recent announcements to tighten alcohol laws, at guess-who's expense? The entertainment industry, of course!
There are no Australians more concerned with preventing drug overdoses than those who deal with it at their events/venues. And they are more concerned with another dangerous trend altogether that has nothing to do with money and everything to do with saving lives.
