Doof Defined
The term 'doof' simply refers to an outdoor dance party theme. Some may prefer a Disco theme or a 50s/60s theme, any which way, the common element that distinguishes one theme from another is the music genre.
The word 'doof' itself was derived (in Australia and New Zealand) from the somewhat unique bass sound often associated with electronic dance music. Since doofs are generally outdoors, the 'doof doof' sound can often be heard some distance away.
Doof Music
Doof music is primarily centered around communicating emotion and feeling using word-less, synthesised sounds. Less like a sing/dance along and more like an instrumental piece, doof music is a journey of the senses.
Pioneered in the late 60s, doof music has slowly evolved from (largely) the musical experiments of the international doof community into one of the most diverse genre of music in the world. It is also this huge cultural diversity that shapes the many varied faces of a doof party theme.
Underground
The term 'underground' refers to the non-commercial nature of the music and vibe - meaning, the development of doof culture and its music has not been restricted to the norms and practices of the commercial music industry.
Most Australian doof recording labels are privately owned and operated, allowing more artists to gain wider exposure. The audience specifically seeks electronica that is not flogged on the airwaves repititiously, they tend to follow that which is new and vibrant and takes them on a different journey.
Doof Fashion
Although ever evolving, the tribal nature of gathering under the stars and swaying to the rythym has greatly influenced doof fashion through the ages. It can be described, at present, as a modernised fusion of Tribal, Steam Punk and Flower-Power, often highlighted with the neon 80s.
No doof party theme is complete without black-light banners, a dancefloor and a PA. A typical doof menu consists of vegetarian dishes, bicuits, cakes and Chai.
Everything else is only limited to imagination!
