Party Poopers

There a few things that might just spoil the party, so make sure you keep them in check. Responsible party-planning involves covering all the bases, even if there's a low likelyhood of them occurring.

Accidents

The last thing any party host wants is to shut down the party because someone has hurt or injured themselves badly. Worse still if those injuries cause a law suit!

If you end up in court you will have to demonstrate that you did everything in your power to prevent exactly that particular type of accident. How well you present your case can be the difference between misadventure and outright neglect.

When in doubt, double-check with your insurance agent. They should advise you on the best practices to avoid liability.

Violence

Nobody expects any of their friends to become violent, but sometimes putting different people together with a bit of alcohol can erupt into violence quite suddenly. Gate crashers who are refused entry might also be another unexpected source of violence.

If violence erupts, you could very well find yourself a witness to an assault charge, or even a victim of assault yourself.

When in doubt, call the Police. They are trained to handle violent behaviour and will remove the offender from your property.

Noise Complaints

When people are having fun the noise can esculate over time, particularly when drinking is involved. You may not notice the subtle changes in volume if you are standing there amongst it, but your neighbours probably will.

If the Police have to attend to a noise complaint more than once, they aren't going to be happy about it. They may confiscate your stereo, shut the party down or, worse, charge you with disturbing the peace.

When in doubt, regularly take walks to the end of your driveway or to the perimeter of your fenceline and double-check the noise level.

Police

The Police should only have to attend if there are accidents, violence or noise complaints. They may want to check-in with you to make sure everything is under control but they shouldn't hassle you unless they suspect something is amiss.

They could suspect some of your guests may be in possession of illicit substances, or that underage drinkers are getting their hands on alcohol, in those cases things may go downhill very fast.

When in doubt, treat the Police with respect and let them do their jobs. More often than not, a bit of lip service will be a dis-service to both you and your guests.
