Q. You mentioned you live on your own property out of town. What are you neighbours like?
A. We're a close community with a lot in common. We look out for each other. If we notice anything going on, like unexplained smoke or road access damage for example, we generally call each other and attend to it fairly quickly.
Q. Do your neighbours ever party?
A. Yeah, we had this one lot next door for a while. They got into it once in a while, lots of drinking, heavy-metal music, paddock bashing and general rukus. But it didn't bother us too much, they only did it once a year and they kept it all over there.
Q. What about doofs? Do any of your neighbours hold doofs?
A. Yeah, there's neighbours on both sides of me who hold doofs occasionally. Again, they keep it all over there and they don't do it very often. We've never had any problems with it.
Personally, I'd prefer a doof next door than the rukus that went on there previously.
Q. Have you ever been invited to one of your neighbour's doofs?
A. Many times. I'm not the all-night-party type, but I've been to a few. It's nice to socialise for a few hours and go home when ever I like and fall into bed. Sometimes I'll join the drumming circle if there is one, don't mind a bit of practice.
Q. Would you like share your general perception of what goes on at doofs?
A. Sure, it's not much different to any other type of party really. Less drinking, more socialising and dancing. It's all pretty relaxed and casual. And I've never witnessed any violence or the kind of behaviour you see at the pub these days.
Q. Rumour has it, there's drugs at doofs. Is this your experience?
A. I heard the same rumour and no, from what I've seen it's mostly moderate drinking. I've never seen any drugs getting around. Come to think of it, nobody has ever asked me about drugs either. You'd think, if there was dealers getting around, they'd be pushing it pretty hard but nobody has ever mentioned drugs to me.
Q. What's the average age group of the doofs you've been to?
A. Well, I've only really been to my neighbours doofs and we're all mostly round the same age. Everyone's over 20 at least, most are between 25 and 40 I guess. I've heard of doofs in other neighbourhoods with nobody over 19 at them, I've got nothing against the kids but I am very glad my neighbours are an older crew.
Q. Why are you glad? What does an older crew bring to the table?
A. Besides maturity, they set the pace. They know how to have fun and relax and it sets a precedence as to how a party feels. It's not a race to get as completely maggot as quickly as possible. It's not a competition to see who can play their tracks the loudest. You know, the usual issues you have with kids at parties.
Q. Are the police out your way often?
A. Never. They have no reason. Like I said, we call each other when we notice anything going on and we sort our own issues out.
Even the kids in the neighbourhood are pretty well behaved. A few neighbours between here and the school often put fruit and veg out with a money box for donations and nothing ever goes missing. You just couldn't do that in town.
Q. Do you have any advice for other residents in other neighbourhoods where doofs are taking place?
A. Pobably not. We all have our own way of dealing with things and some have broader shoulders than others. I'm just glad I'm able to get along with my neighbours. Might be a different story if they doofed every weekend, though.
Maybe try going to your neighbour's party to see what it's all about before barking about it. Or speaking with them directly if the noise is too much. The usual stuff neighbours do.
Q. Your neighbourhood sounds like a great place to live. What do you do with your time when your not socialising with your neighbours?
A. I grow Macadamias. Just the usual farm chores. I've only got a small farm but at harvest, I sometimes hire a few kids in the neighbourhood to help out. They're always keen for a bit of pocket money but mostly, I just enjoy the company.
Thanks for making the time to speak with us and sharing your perspective. May the weather be kind to your nuts!
